Insieme con sua moglie Patricia è insignito della Royal Institute of British Architects Royal Gold Medal. E’ stato eletto alla Royal Academy nel 1992. Tra i suoi lavori più importanti ricordiamo: la new opera house at Glyndebourne; il Jubilee Campus of the University of Nottingham, with the National College for School Leadership; Our Dynamic Earth science and conference centre in Edinburgh; il nuovo edificio per il  Wellcome Trust in London. 

Michael Hopkins è un architetto che ha posto grande attenzione alla realtà tecnologica presente nell’architettura da alcuni decenni a questa parte. Lo spirito dell’architetto britannico è di quelli però che non si affidano ciecamente alle conquiste della tecnica. Nella sua opera sono riscontrabili, e per questo possiamo annoverarlo tra gli esponenti davvero interessanti della nuova architettura, segni che inducono ad un dialogo le forme dell’architettura, tale dialogo è intessuto di trame visibili che riallacciano i rapporti tra il costruito e il paesaggio, tra la memoria e l’innovazione, tra la leggerezza e la stabilità che con grande esattezza Hopkins misura e dispone nelle sue euritmiche composizioni.  L’architettura di Hopkins guarda alla filosofia bioclimatica come capacità di comprendere i luoghi e i materiali, esprimendo delle architetture forti di quel genius loci che le caratterizza così britannicamente e questo modo di concepire l’architettura è per Hopkins una speranza per sviluppare un nuovo linguaggio capace di migliorare, come afferma egli stesso, il modo di abitare le nostre città. Michael Hopkins is an architect who has placed great attention towards the technological reality that has been present in architecture for a few decades. The spirit of the British architect is, however, the one of who doesn’t blindly place his trust in technical conquests. In his work, and because of this we can include him among the truly interesting exponents of the new architecture, it’s possible to notice signs that induce a dialog between the forms of architecture; this dialog is interwoven by visible woofs that re-link the relationships between what is built and the landscape, between memory and innovation, lightness and stability, which Hopkins measures through great precision and arranges in his eurhythmic compositions. Hopkins’ architecture looks up to bioclimatic philosophy as the capacity to understand the sites and the materials, conveying strong architectures with the strength of that genius loci that characterize them in such a British way and such manner of conceiving architecture is for Hopkins a hope to develop a new language capable of, like he says, improving the way of living our cities.
